Product & Food Photography. What’s the difference?
It’s been said that photography is both an art & a science. And of course, that’s certainly a true statement when talking about a commercial product or food photography.
Food is a product. But does that make it product photography? Well, not really. While there’s an overlap between them, food photography and product photography are still pretty different.
It’s very true that both commercial product and food images have a goal to get people to do something. Buy or eat! But editorial food shoots require a little more Art, while product photography is a little more scientific.
For a commercial product shoot, it’s more crucial to show every aspect of the product, even if it’s a lifestyle shot. Consumers want to see every angle of a product to see exactly what they’re getting. Photographers work very diligently to get precise shots of them.
Now contrast food photography. It’s all about hitting your senses. Your audience doesn’t really need every angle of the cheeseburger to want to buy it. They just see that cheeseburger, get hungry and want to buy and eat that cheeseburger!
So think of product photography as being very measured, scientific, calculated, and precise to get a very specific-looking result. And Food photography, on the other hand, is like a free-spirited cook.
